How To Tell If Eggs Are Bad In Water

Eggs have become a mandatory part of our daily diet intake, mostly because of their tremendous health benefits, low in fats and rich in proteins.

It’s the main ingredient of all grocery trolleys when you go out shopping.

Given this reason, eggs are normally purchased in quantities and are sometimes left unused for a while.

So what should you do to check if an egg is bad or still good to go on your breakfast platter?

It ‘s nice to know if you can cook an egg or not if the expiry dates of the eggs are exceeded, especially when eggs remained hidden in the drawer of the refrigerator.

For all the little tricks on how to tell if an egg is bad, follow these guidelines.

Do NOT eat a cracked egg!

The micro-cracks in the egg usually occur as a result of improper handling of eggs during transportation or placing on shelves in the store.

It is suggested in this case not to consume a cracked egg because its outer layer can then be altered and the egg has lost its natural protection.

Microbes and bacteria will indeed have penetrated inside the egg and thus can be harmful to your health. However, if you accidentally damage the shell, the egg should be immediately consumed to prevent the fore-mentioned issues.

Shaking the egg:

To tell if an egg is bad, shake the egg while holding it next to your ear, listening for a splashing sound. So what causes this? As the egg gets older, the carbon dioxide leaks through the shell.

The eggs contents that are the egg white and yolk begin to shrink. A reduction in their volume allows them to move more freely inside the shell when shaken, making that sloshing sound.

When shaken, an egg that is at peak freshness should not make much noise, if it does anyways. However, this sound does not necessarily indicate that the egg is bad. It only specifies the age of the egg.

The oldest of all, what is popularly known as the ‘grandmother test’ is the water test.
If the ‘best before date’ is no longer visible in the egg, dip the egg into a glass of water. If the egg sinks, it is always good.

If the egg suspends somewhere in the middle, it is still good but should be consumed quickly as it is now moving towards its expiry. If the egg floats on the water surface, it is bad.
